What is a 3D Body Scan?

Top medical research universities use the DexaFit’s 3D scan to investigate several important areas of health, including morbidity, nutrition, and psychology.

The technology uses a special type of camera to project infrared light onto your body. This light looks like a web of dots. It's imperceptible to the human eye, but clear as day to the camera’s processor!

This processor determines measurements from the displacement of the dots on your body.

You might be wondering, how accurate are 3D scaners?

These measurements are so precise that there is only half an inch (max) of variance between scans.

“Incredibly detailed images! I could tell my HIIT class, my jogging, and the everyday gym workouts were contributing to all of the results from the challenge.” - Andre Anderson, Key Health Institute Edmond, First Place Inch Loss Challenge Winner

“You forget sometimes and get lost in what you started your journey for. Looking at this transformation, I remember why I started! 160lbs when I began and 135lbs now. I cant thank you guys enough seriously!” - Valerie D., Revolutionize

How it works

  1. Schedule your 15-minute 3D body scan appointment at your nearest DexaFit location.

  2. Complete the test. The process is simple and noninvasive: simply stand on the platform, grab the handles, and stay still as a statue for about 40 seconds. The machine will take a complete 3D, 360 degree body scan and export the data to the 3D software.

  3. Analyze and review your report with your technician.

  4. Login to your secure dashboard to review your results anytime.

3D Body Scan FAQs

Getting a 3D body scan is an excellent choice for those who want more precise and wholistic insights about body measurements, shape, and more.

However, you might have some additional questions about what exactly a 3D body scan is, and why it’s useful. Below are some of the most frequently asked questions about a 3D body scan:

Who makes 3D Body Scanners?

The two main manufacturers of 3D body scanners are Fit3D and Styku, the top two leaders in the industry. Both of these companies work directly with DexaFit, and supply all of our facilities nationwide.

Which types of businesses use 3D Body Scanners?

Fitness professionals, doctors, personal trainers, and even tailors use 3D scanners and their technology to help patients and clients.

Specifically, plastic surgeons, dermatologists, and other aesthetic professionals utilize the scanner technology to make assessments about a procedure, and to show before/after comparisons. Tailors can leverage this technology to design custom clothing that fits their clients perfectly.

At DexaFit, clients are able to get precise insights and measurements about their body shape with a 3d body scan. If you’re someone who wants to measure your BMI, weight loss or muscle building over time, you might even want to schedule regular 3D body scans to track your progress.

How accurate are 3D body scanners?

For Styku, a study at the University of North Dakota found their reliability to be "nearly perfect" for measuring circumferences, surface areas and volumes of the body.

While the external scanning results of these 3D body scanners are excellent, we always recommend that clients pair it with a DXA scan for the most accurate analysis and data for things like body composition and fat percentage.

What are the advantages of using a 3D Body Scanner?

  1. Increased accuracy: 3D body scanners provide a much more accurate picture of a person’s body shape than traditional methods.

  2. Time saving: The scanning process is much faster than traditional methods (35 seconds), so you can comfortably schedule an appointment and be in and out within minutes.

  3. Privacy: 3D body scanners allow for measurements to be taken without the need to undress, meaning that privacy is maintained.

  4. Cost effective: 3D body scanners are a much more cost effective option than traditional methods as they require less time and labour to complete.

DEXA Scan vs 3D Body Scan: What’s the Difference?

Simply put, DEXA scans offer the best analysis and data for your body’s internal measurements, whereas the 3D body scan is ideal for measuring your body’s external measurements. Therefore, the collective data you get from combining both scans produces a more comprehensive result.

The DEXA scan, also known as a Dual-energy absorptiometry (DXA) scan, is the most accurate method for body composition analysis. DEXA scans utilize x-ray technology to accurately measure the internal factors mentioned above, such as your body composition, fat percentage, and bone health.

The 3D body scan uses advanced imaging technology and depth sensors to create a 3d avatar (or model) of your body.

Both the DEXA scanner and the 3D body scanner use a combination of hardware and software to collect and display your results.
